Audience Enrichment Programs


Audience Enrichment Programs have become an important part of Portland Shakespeare Project’s play-going experience. Resident Artist Lisa Harrow, Artistic Director Michael Mendelson and PSP Scholar-in-Residence Dr. Daniel Pollack-Pelzner anchor a variety of pre- and post- show programs to inform and enrich your enjoyment of our productions this year.

Before the Show

Watch the Show Like A Shakespeare Scholar: Scholar-in-Residence Dr. Daniel Pollack-Pelzner offers his unique, insightful and lively look at the play’s themes, characters and plots and tells you what he will be looking for as he watches Twelfth Night.

Sex in Shakespeare Panel Discussion:  Scholar-in-Residence Dr. Daniel Pollack-Pelzner is
joined by Amy Greenstadt, Associate Professor of English at Portland State University, Lois Leveen, author of Juliet’s Nurse, and Erica Terpening-Romeo, Co-Artistic Director of Anon It Moves, for a lively discussion about Twelfth Night and the more general topic of sex in Shakespeare.
Thursday, July 30, 6:30-7:15 pm, Alder Lobby

Pre-Show Discussions:  On Friday and Saturday nights, from 7:00-7:15, Portland Shakespeare Project dramaturges will briefly discuss the plot, key passages to look for, character development and overarching themes of Twelfth Night – and explain what makes this production unique.

Pre-Show Discussion:  Dr. Daniel Pollack-Pelzner will discuss what makes Henry James’ ghostly 1898 masterpiece, The Turn of the Screw, so haunting — and will explore the strange, twisted history of its many interpretations and adaptations.

Post-show Discussion with Lisa Harrow: Following the matinee performance of Twelfth Night, Resident Artist and Director of Twelfth Night, Lisa Harrow, will discuss the show. She will be joined by other members of the cast.
Sunday, July 12, Alder Theatre – 15 minutes after the show ends

After The Play Wine & Hors d’Oeuvres:  Following the Sunday matinee performance of Twelfth Night, join Artistic Director Michael Mendelson for wine and hors d’oeuvres in the Alder Stage lobby. Learn answers to your questions about the production and discuss the show in a lively and relaxed post-show setting.

Post-show Discussions with Michael Mendelson: Following the matinee performance of Twelfth Night on Sunday, Artistic Director Michael Mendelson and members of the cast will discuss the show.

Our  Scholar-in-Residence

Dr. Daniel Pollack-Pelzner, Assistant Professor of English at Linfield College, received his Ph.D.  from Harvard, where he helped to edit the Norton edition of Shakespeare’s complete works.

He has published and lectured widely on Shakespeare and British literature and is currently writing a book about Shakespeare adaptations.

A Portland native, he also trained as an actor with Tygres Heart, the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, and the Yale Shakespeare Company.  He loves talking about Shakespeare with newcomers and aficionados alike.
